Chapter Hosts Cancer Prevention Workshop at Las Positas College

EducationApril 3, 2026Contra Costa County ACS SEL Leadership Team

In early April, Contra Costa County ACS SEL members led a cancer prevention and advocacy workshop at Las Positas College, bringing the chapter's educational mission directly to a college campus audience.

The 45-minute session covered three core areas: understanding common cancer risk factors and how lifestyle choices affect long-term cancer risk; the importance of early detection and what screenings are recommended for young adults; and an introduction to ACS CAN's advocacy work and how college students can get involved.

Attendance was open to all students, and the turnout reflected genuine interest in health education among the college community. Several attendees were unaware that youth-led cancer advocacy organizations like the SEL existed, and a number expressed interest in joining or starting a chapter presence at Las Positas.

Workshops like this one are central to our chapter's education mission — meeting students where they are and making cancer prevention and policy feel accessible, not abstract. We're in early conversations about making this a recurring presence on campus.
